NOW we know why there was no mention of 3D in the U.S. teaser trailer...
After yesterday's epic first trailer, the good Mockingjay - Part 2 news keep rolling in: Lionsgate just announced (via Forbes) that the previously announced 3D release of the film is being scrapped in the United States. Director Francis Lawrence had the following to say:
I love the 3D format and I know that Mockingjay Part 2 will play perfectly in 3D and 2D internationally – but I’m pleased that we’re maintaining the 2D only (and IMAX) formats domestically. It is the best of all worlds!
The international release of Mockingjay - Part 2 will still feature the film in 3D, as well as 2D formats. The international IMAX 3D release of the film is still being worked out - it's currently only confirmed in Russia/CIS (per the trailer). It is unlikely that there will be any IMAX 2D screenings of the film outside the United States, due to IMAX theatres' one-screen nature.
The removal of the 3D option will keep the franchise's status as one of the biggest 2D-only domestic box-office earners, and won't have a significant impact at all on the film's gross - in fact U.S. audiences are more against 3D, compared to international markets where 3D and premium formats like IMAX are important to actually get people to go out to theatres instead of opting to download the films illegally.
Stay tuned as we hear more about this.
